OpenAI has officially released Codex, its AI-driven software engineering assistant, marking the transition from research preview to full general availability. The update brings several new features, including a software development kit (SDK), Slack integration, and advanced admin tools for managing Codex across organizations.
Codex Moves Beyond Research Preview
Initially introduced in May as an experimental project, Codex has now matured into a robust coding agent capable of working across multiple development environments — from the command line and IDEs to the cloud — all unified through a ChatGPT account.
With general availability announced on October 6, developers can now access Codex directly through chatgpt.com. According to OpenAI, the latest version provides greater stability, faster task execution, and more seamless collaboration across connected platforms.
Expanding the Ecosystem: SDK and Slack Integration
The newly released Codex SDK allows developers to embed the AI agent directly into their own workflows, tools, or custom applications. The SDK currently supports TypeScript, with additional languages planned for future releases.
At the same time, OpenAI is introducing Slack integration, enabling teams to interact with Codex right from within their Slack channels or threads. Developers and project managers can assign coding tasks, request help, or ask technical questions without leaving the workspace.
OpenAI has also released a GitHub Action for integrating Codex into CI/CD pipelines, enabling automated code reviews, testing, and deployment assistance.
New Admin Tools for Scalable Management
For organizations running Codex at scale, OpenAI has rolled out new administrative capabilities designed to improve oversight and governance. These tools include environment management, monitoring dashboards, and usage analytics, giving admins the ability to view, edit, or delete Codex environments in real time.
Administrators can now track how Codex interacts with different systems — from CLI and IDEs to web interfaces — and assess the quality of AI-generated code reviews and commits.
Availability and Pricing
The Slack integration and Codex SDK are now accessible to developers on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans, starting October 6. The enhanced admin features are available for Business, Edu, and Enterprise accounts only.
Beginning October 20, Codex cloud tasks will count toward usage limits under each plan. Users can check OpenAI’s documentation for detailed pricing and usage information.
With these upgrades, OpenAI continues to position Codex not just as a coding companion but as a fully integrated AI development platform, bridging communication, automation, and cloud-based software engineering.
